Grapefruit
Food Facts
Tart and tangy with a hint of sweetness, grapefruit has a juiciness that rivals many fruits. It also boosts several health promoting benefits.
Storage & Handling
Grapefruits should be firm, yet slightly springy when gentle pressure is applied. Grapefruit can be kept at room temperature and should have a subtly sweet aroma.
Usage Tips
Grapefruit makes a great snack simply by cutting in half and sprinkling sugar over top. Grapefruit sections add a tangy flavour to green salads. Instead of your morning glass of OJ, try a glass of grapefruit juice.
Lemons
Food Facts
Lemons were originally developed as a cross between the lime and the citron and are thought to have originated in China or India. While most lemons are tart and acidic, they are also surprisingly refreshing.
Storage & Handling
Lemons will stay fresh kept at room temperature for about one week. You can also store lemons in the refrigerator where they will keep for about four weeks.
Usage Tips
Combine lemon juice with olive or flax oil, freshly crushed garlic and pepper to make a light and refreshing salad dressing. If you are watching your salt intake, serve lemon wedges with meals as their tartness makes a great salt substitute.
Limes
Food Facts
Although limes may not be what you would choose for a snack, we consider them a great companion fruit to bring out the flavour of other foods.
Storage & Handling
Limes can be kept out at room temperature where they will stay fresh for up to one week. They can also be stored in the refrigerator, wrapped in a loosely sealed plastic bag, where they will keep fresh for about 10-14 days. They do keep longer than that, but will start to lose their flavour after 14 days.
Usage Tips
Squeeze some lime juice onto an avocado quarter and eat as is. Combine freshly squeezed lime juice, evaporated cane juice and either plain or sparkling water to make limeade.
Mandarins
Food Facts
Most mandarins are sweeter than their other citrus cousins with a bright orange skin that is easy to peel, and inner segments that are easily separated.
Storage & Handling
Store the mandarins in a cool place for 1-2 weeks. Refrigerate mandarins that are not used within that time. The flavour may change slightly, but the fruit will stay fresh for another week or more.
Usage Tips
Mandarin oranges are perfect for salads, main dishes and, of course, desserts.
